Year 6 at Longlands
Year 6 is a significant and memorable year for our pupils. It marks the final stage of primary education and prepares children for their transition to secondary school. Our aim is to ensure that every child leaves Longlands feeling confident, capable and ready for the next exciting chapter in their learning journey.
Our Year 6 Team
- Mrs Ciftci – Class Teacher (Teaching Monday to Wednesday lunchtime)
- Mrs Strange – Class Teacher (Teaching Wednesday afternoon to Friday)
- Mrs Kenealy – Teaching Assistant
Our dedicated team works closely together to ensure a smooth and consistent experience for the children throughout the week. We focus on building strong relationships with each child and supporting them both academically and emotionally, helping them to make the most of their final year at Longlands.
Learning in Year 6
Children in Year 6 follow the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum, which brings together all the skills and knowledge they have developed throughout their time in primary school.
In English, children refine their reading comprehension, write with greater fluency and accuracy, and apply advanced grammar and punctuation. They also learn to write for a range of purposes and audiences.
In mathematics, children consolidate their understanding of number, fractions, decimals and percentages, and apply their skills to solve multi-step problems. They also explore geometry, statistics and algebra in preparation for secondary school.
Our curriculum includes exciting topic work such as:
- The Vikings
- The Amazon Rainforest
- Evolution
- Electricity
These topics encourage children to think critically, ask questions and make connections across subjects.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
We continue to follow the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, which supports children’s emotional wellbeing, social skills and personal development. Each half term focuses on a different theme, such as:
- Being Me in My World
- Healthy Me
- Dreams and Goals
These sessions help children reflect on their identity, relationships and aspirations, and prepare them for the changes ahead.
