Year 5 at Longlands
Year 5 is a dynamic and important year in your child’s learning journey. As children begin the upper phase of Key Stage 2, they are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their learning, organisation and behaviour. They develop skills that will support them well into Year 6 and beyond.
Our Year 5 Team
- Mr Bargery – Class Teacher
- Miss Haran and Mrs Axendiou – Teaching Assistants
Our team works together to create a supportive and structured environment where children are challenged, encouraged and celebrated.
Learning in Year 5
Children in Year 5 follow the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum, which continues to build on core skills in English and mathematics while expanding knowledge across a broad range of subjects.
In English, children develop their comprehension through guided reading sessions and learn to write with greater accuracy, creativity and purpose. Grammar, punctuation and spelling are taught explicitly and applied across all subjects.
In mathematics, children deepen their understanding of place value, fractions, decimals and percentages, and apply their skills to solve increasingly complex problems.
Our curriculum also includes exciting topic work such as:
- Ancient Greece
- Earthquakes
- Crime and Punishment
- Space
These topics help children explore history, geography and science in engaging and meaningful ways.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
We continue to follow the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, which supports children’s emotional wellbeing, social skills and personal development. Each half term focuses on a different theme, such as:
- Being Me in My World
- Healthy Me
- Dreams and Goals
These sessions help children understand themselves and others, build resilience and develop positive relationships.
