Learning in Year 1
Year 1 is a busy and engaging environment where children continue to develop key skills in reading, writing and mathematics. Daily lessons include:
- Phonics – building early reading and spelling skills
- Handwriting – developing fine motor control and letter formation
- Mathematics – exploring number, counting, and basic calculations
Children also enjoy a broad and balanced curriculum that includes exciting topics such as:
- The Great Fire of London
- Weather and Seasons
- Making Maps and Exploring Places
These topics are designed to spark curiosity and help children make connections with the world around them.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
We follow the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, which supports children’s emotional wellbeing, social skills and personal development. Each half term focuses on a different theme, such as:
- Being Me in My World
- Healthy Me
- Dreams and Goals
These sessions help children understand themselves and others, build resilience and develop positive relationships.
