‘Onwards and Upwards!’

Year 2

Year 2 at Longlands

Year 2 is a time of growing independence, curiosity and confidence. Children continue to build on the foundations laid in earlier years, developing a deeper understanding of the world around them and strengthening key academic and social skills.

Our Year 2 Team

  • Miss Ward – Class Teacher
  • Miss Granville and Mrs Dipple – Teaching Assistants

Our caring and experienced team works closely with each child to support their learning and wellbeing, creating a positive and engaging classroom environment.

Learning in Year 2

Children in Year 2 follow the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum, which includes exciting and meaningful learning across a range of subjects.

In English, children develop their reading fluency, comprehension and writing skills, including spelling, punctuation and grammar. In mathematics, they build confidence with number facts, place value, and solving simple problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Our curriculum also includes engaging topic work such as:

  • Local History Detectives
  • The Food on Our Plates
  • Habitats

These themes help children explore history, geography and science in a way that is hands-on and connected to their everyday experiences.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We continue to follow the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, which supports children’s emotional literacy, social skills and personal development. Each half term focuses on a different theme, such as:

  • Being Me in My World
  • Healthy Me
  • Dreams and Goals

These sessions help children understand themselves and others, build resilience and develop positive relationships.
