‘Onwards and Upwards!’

Year 4

Year 4 at Longlands

Year 4 is a lively and engaging year where children continue to grow in independence and confidence. With a rich and varied curriculum, children are encouraged to explore new ideas, deepen their understanding and apply their learning in creative and meaningful ways.

Our Year 4 Team

  • Mr Welch – Class Teacher
  • Mr Dixon and Mrs Falomo – Teaching Assistants

Our team works together to create a supportive and stimulating learning environment where every child is encouraged to thrive.

Learning in Year 4

Children in Year 4 follow the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum, which builds on the foundations of previous years and introduces more complex concepts across subjects.

In mathematics, children focus on mastering all times tables up to 12 × 12, developing mental and written calculation strategies, and solving real-life problems involving number, shape, and measure.

In English, we continue to foster a love of reading and writing, with a strong emphasis on spelling, grammar and punctuation. Children learn to write for different purposes and audiences, and develop their comprehension skills through a wide range of texts.

Our curriculum also includes exciting topic work such as:

  • Roman Britain
  • Mountains
  • Teeth and Digestion

These topics help children make connections across subjects and encourage curiosity about the world around them.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We continue to follow the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, which supports children’s emotional wellbeing, social skills and personal development. Each half term focuses on a different theme, such as:

  • Being Me in My World
  • Healthy Me
  • Dreams and Goals

These sessions help children understand themselves and others, build resilience and develop positive relationships.
