Physical Education

Intent

Physical Education is a compulsory National Curriculum subject. All classes have timetabled sessions of physical education each week.  The teaching of physical education is about developing children’s enjoyment, confidence, skills and fitness. It is a practical subject which aims to give all children opportunities for participation, enjoyment and success.

At Longlands School we ensure that we develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities. These include dance, games, multi-skills, gymnastics, swimming and water safety, athletics and outdoor adventure activities. Physical education at Longlands school promotes an understanding in children of their bodies in action. It involves thinking, selecting and applying skills, and it promotes positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle. Thus, we enable the children to make informed choices about physical activity throughout their lives.

We strive to ensure that all children are able to fulfil their potential whilst participating in fun and motivating physical education lessons as well as extra-curricular opportunities outside of the school day. We want them to participate and succeed in competitive sport and physical education, offering them chances to compete in a variety of sports and physical activities, which in turn helps to build character and learn values such as fairness, respect and resilience.

Implementation

Our PE curriculum ensures that each child receives 2 hours of PE a week, with specialist coaches and their class teachers. Our planning is based on the Complete PE scheme allowing us to cover a wide range of skills and activities and shows progression throughout the different key stages and year groups. Children in Key stage 2 attend swimming lessons in a local pool where they learn to swim 25 metres in a range of strokes. Children are also given opportunities to be active in a wide range of extra curricular clubs. We have an active sports council who help support children being physically active during their lunch play, support with the annual sports days and help to plan our annual sports week. During sports week we provide the children with the chance to try a variety of different sports through sport specific workshops, these have included archery, quidditch, karate, circus skills, orienteering, dance, tag rugby among others. In the Summer term we hold  Sports Days for families to attend.

We teach in a way that children:

· Have fun, are motivated and achieve success across a wide variety of sports

· Can all access the curriculum, at their own level of development

· Build and secure a range of skills

· Develop positive values linked to sport that they can transfer to other areas of their lives

· Understand basic rules and tactics to help them perform at a higher level of development

· Experience positive competition through inter and intra school competitions

· Learn in a safe environment

Lessons aim to promote personal, social, intellectual and physical skills and foster the values of co-operation, tolerance and self-esteem.
